Happy December! In the midst of the suddenly cold weather, the RaisingHealth team is staying warm knowing we’ll be celebrating this holiday season with our community and all of you. We have several seasonal activities planned, most notably our annual Winter Wonderland event! Keep reading for more information about the month ahead.
The RaisingHealth team is in the office Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. Visit us to make an appointment to receive a health screening, get help navigating social services, or learn more about how to keep you and your family healthy.
Upcoming Events and Announcements
Flu Clinic
This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week! To recognize this special occasion and help our community protect itself against serious illness from the flu, we are holding a flu clinic TOMORROW (Saturday, December 7) from 2-5pm! Register here for your free appointment.
Toy Drive
There’s still time to donate toys to our toy drive, which ends December 12! We’re collecting toys for children ages 3-10 to give out at our annual Winter Wonderland event, which also features free health screenings, resources, food, and holiday decorations. We’d greatly appreciate your donation of toys to help us bring holiday cheer to the children in our community! You can drop off unwrapped toys at any of the following locations:

English Class Enrollment is Open
Registration is open for the winter semester of our free English classes, available at Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels! We are especially looking for Intermediate and Advanced level students. Classes will take place weekly starting January 4th. Learn more and register here!
Conversation and Digital Literacy Classes
We are offering both free conversation classes and computer literacy classes to anyone who wants to improve their conversational and digital skills in English. Conversation classes take place in Sunset Park on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons – register at bit.ly/rhconversationclass. Volunteer Opportunities
RaisingHealth is seeking committed volunteers who want to make a difference in the Sunset Park community! Volunteer activities include assisting with community outreach, food distributions, health fairs, and translation/interpretation. Sign up here!
We are also looking for individuals to join our Community Care Team, a small group of volunteers that are dedicated to providing safety services for our community. All of our Community Care volunteers receive safety trainings on upstander intervention and de-escalation. We would love to offer safety accompaniment services to community members who may be experiencing anxiety traveling through the neighborhood on their own. If you are interested in joining us, fill out our interest form!
RaisingHealth Mental Health Services
Have you faced a traumatic incident? Experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness? Would you like to speak with someone? RaisingHealth offers FREE mental health therapy in English, Spanish, and Chinese Mandarin, Cantonese, and Taishanese! If you’re uninsured or underinsured and seeking mental health assistance, fill out this interest form.
Free Blood Pressure Tests
RaisingHealth is offering a FREE blood pressure test with our community health partners on a WALK-IN basis. Get yours checked at our office (5306 3rd Ave, 2 Floor, Brooklyn) on Fridays from 10am-6pm or Saturdays from 10am-12pm. For more information, please call 212-256-9036.

November Snapshots
Men’s Health Fair
We gathered 30 men from the Sunset Park community at our first-ever Men’s Health Fair to hear from a panel of physicians and ask questions about their physical and mental health. We also provided free grocery bags, hypertension screenings, and health resources.
Mural Unveiling
In a special celebration of community, we held a mural unveiling and ribbon cutting for the mural on which we collaborated with artist Yukiko Izumi and The Green-Wood Cemetery. The finished mural is a testament to the power and beauty of the Sunset Park community, including its people, places, animals, and more.
Flu Clinic
RaisingHealth held a free flu clinic at Duane Reade Pharmacy, vaccinating 28 Sunset Park community members to protect against the seasonal flu. Our next flu clinic will take place tomorrow - Saturday, December 7. Sign up here!
Food Distribution
We provided turkeys for Thanksgiving and fresh, culturally-appropriate produce to 380 community members during our food distributions held in November!

Thanksgiving Celebrations
Two of our Beginner level English classes celebrated Thanksgiving together last week! Students and instructors brought a variety of dishes and snacks, many from their own cultures, and family members joined as well.
Supporting Student Artists
We are proud to say that one of our ESOL students was featured in an art exhibit in Red Hook called the Salon des Refuses, organized by the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition! Her classmates and instructor rallied to visit the exhibit with her and admire her work.

Flu Season
Flu season is ongoing! It is crucial to get your flu shot as soon as you can to help prevent serious illness from the flu. COVID-19 is also still circulating around NYC. We highly recommend you get both a flu shot and the recently updated COVID vaccine this fall!

Laboratory testing for COVID-19 remains low to no cost at NYC Health+Hospitals locations. If you are an NYC Health+Hospitals patient, you can schedule a COVID test by calling 1-844-NYC-4NYC. Private insurance may no longer reimburse you when you purchase at-home test kits. For now, oral antiviral medicines, including Paxlovid, remain free. Find a location on the COVID-19 Test to Treat Locator or call 212-COVID-19.
Asylum Seeker Resource Navigation Network
If you entered the U.S. after January 1, 2022, and currently live in New York, you are eligible for services and referrals by the Asylum Seeker Resource Navigation Network, which was recently launched by the City. Visit this site to learn more and make an appointment, conducted in your preferred language.
NYIC’s Community Toolkit
The New York Immigration Coaltion’s (NYIC) New York State Community Toolkit is an all-in-one resource guide for community members, partners, and allies. It is updated regularly based on changing laws and policies and connects immigrant New Yorkers with resources across the state. It is published in English, Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, French, Karen, Nepali, Somali, Creole, Polish, and Ukrainian. Download the toolkit here.
